Keep Your RV Cool While RVing In Hot Weather Print
Written by Brenda-Lee Thompson

Keep Your RV Cool While RVing In Hot Weather (Air Conditioner)To keep your RV cool while RVing in hot weather, follow these easy and economical tips:
  • Seems obvious, but we find we have forgotten to close a window or vent while our a/c is running. Check to make sure everything is closed. Foam cushions can be purchased to fit into the vent openings from the inside providing extra insulation. Bubble foil kits can be purchased for vents that include small Velcro patches for quick installation and removal.
  • While RVing, make sure your system fan is on high speed. Running the fan on high speed will use less energy overall as the air conditioner will shut down periodically.
  • Check that the fins on the air conditioner are not damaged or bent. Remove the cover on the roof of your RV if you cannot see the fins. Some fins are visible with the cover on. If the fins are bent over carefully and gently separate the fins with a screwdriver. A fin comb is available but the careful use of a screwdriver will yield good results. Separating the fins will allow maximum air flow over all the fins for maximum cooling.
  • Clean the interior air filter on the air return vent. Many have clip out filters while some need to have a panel unscrewed for access. Wash out the filter with warm water and a mild detergent, then allow to air dry. Reinstall the filter and enjoy the cool while RVing.
  • Parking under trees is obvious, but you can also keep your RV cool in the shade of nearby hills and rocky cliffs. This can significantly shorten the number of hours the sun beats down on your RV. Park with your awning facing the sun during the hottest times of the day so as to shade the side of your RV with the awning. Park your rig so that the sidewalls of the RV take the least amount of sun in a day.
  • Pull your blinds and shades down to keep out as much of the solar heat as possible. The windows of your RV absorb a lot of solar energy and transfer this heat inside. Cardboard can be used between the window glass and the window coverings inside the RV. While simple and cheap, this is a very effective way to keep your RV cool on the inside.
  • Insulated bubble foil is even more effective than cardboard at keeping the heat out. Once cut to size it can be stored behind dinette cushions for future use. The bubble foil is available at hardware stores. It Keep Your RV Cool While RVing In Hot Weather (Fan)comes in various widths and lengths and can easily be custom cut with scissors to fit your RV windows. The bubble foil provides about an R-6 insulation value. You can cut covers for your RV vents as well and use small Velcro patches for quick installation and removal.
  • Last but not least, keep a table fan or two in your rig. One in the bedroom and one in the main living area will help to keep air circulating while RVing in hot weather.  Simply moving the warmer air around can help you extend the time before actually turning on the a/c.

These tips are economical ways to manage the heat and the electric bill.  Follow any or all of these tips to keep your RV cool while RVing!

RVing Pop up Recycle Bin for the RVer by Camco Print
Written by Brenda-Lee Thompson

The RVing pop up recycle bin provides a much needed solution for the RV lifestyle. We have all trained ourselves to recycle at home. Bins designed for home kitchen or garage use provide the necessary room for sorting glass, plastic and paper. However, it can be challenging to bring our good recycling habits along on the road.

We want to sort items and eventually deposit them at a recycle depot or the RV park's recycle facility, but where does one keep them in the meantime? Space inside the RV is at a premium, and open bins outside the RV look untidy and can attract flies.

The Camco pop up recycle bin is a great RVing solution. When not in use, it collapses into a flat shape which is easily stored under the bed, sofa, or in a storage locker. When ready for use, the handy dividers keep the recycle items sorted. A zipper top on the pop up recycle bin keeps flies out and items in if tipped over. Order an RVing pop up recycle bin directly from Camco. Now any RVer can ease the environmental conscience while away from home!

Clickfree Automatic Backup: RVing Computer Solution Print
Written by Adrian Thompson

Clickfree Automatic Backup is a lightweight and economical RVing computer backup solution.  Backing up your laptop computer while RVing and away from home for weeks or months is a chore which is often neglected.  ClickFree Automatic Backup - Connected to USB of Computer RVing Computer Solution

We are always amazed at how many of our friends, family and fellow RVers never backup the data on their computers. Years of memories are lost when hard drives fail. Everyone hopes it never happens to them, but every year someone we know loses some or all of their data or precious family photos. RVers usually take lots of pictures of their travels, and bring electronic photo albums of loved ones to ease the pain of homesickness.  All of these photos are irreplaceable. 12% of all computer users will suffer a hard drive failure! There is a very good chance that it will happen to you and when it does it is an agonizing experience.
Any RVer who owns a computer, should know about the most amazingly simple way to backup and protect the valuable data. We have tried almost every type of backup: tape, CD, DVD & external hard drives.  But this method leaves the others gathering dust.
The process is... wait for it...just connect a plug into the USB port on your computer. What's next you ask? Nothing;  you are done! There is no software to install. This automatic backup device searches, finds and backs up your data.
A company called Clickfree has developed a portable external hard drive which is physically a little bigger than a cell phone.  The unit  automatically searches for all the data files on your computer and backs them up to the external hard drive without you doing anything but plugging it into your computer. The device searches for over 400 known data file types. It will even backup your desktop icons, web browser favourites and email addresses if you use an email program like Outlook.
RVers often have several computers.  The Clickfree automatic backup can be moved from one computer to the next to do multiple backups using the same USB cable. Each computer's data is stored separately and is able to be restored separately.  This multiple backup feature is the perfect way to keep all your data files safe and easy to access.
Files are stored in folders with other similar files.  Your photos, music, etc., can easily be viewed on the Clickfree, in one place with the single click of your mouse.  You can also set up reminders on your ClickFree Automatic Backup and USB Cable RVing Computer Solutioncomputer to tell you when it is time to do your next backup so that you don't forget.  We set ours up for a weekly reminder.
In addition if you are thinking of upgrading to Vista or Windows 7, the Clickfree automatic backup will place your old files in the correct place on your new computer.
The Clickfree product is very economical, starting at $99 for a portable model that has 160Gb of storage. A 500GB model is $159.00. I would suggest buying the largest size you can afford.  If you think it is too expensive, measure the cost and aggravation of having to re-create files in the event of a crash - especially while RVing in unfamiliar locales with little or no access to familiar computer support.   What is your time worth?  What are your RVing photo memories worth?
No...we do not work for Clickfree.  We are just so jazzed about this RVing computer back up solution, we can't help but want to pass the information along.
You can order your Clickfree automatic backup device on line directly at www.clickfree.com

RVing Teacapan, Remote Beach in Mexico by RV Print
Written by Brenda-Lee Thompson

RVing Teacapan.  This little-known location provides a tranquil small town experience when visiting Mexico by RV.  Teacapan, in the state of Sinaloa, is a coastal Mexican fishing village located an hour-and-a-half drive south of Mazatlan.  The entry arches to the town say it all:  "Teacapan - Pueblo de Pescadores" (town of fishermen).  This is not a tourist-saturated area at all, but even so, it is a popular destination for those who visit Mexico by RV.  The whole Teacapan peninsula is rural with field after field of peppers and tomatoes.  The pueblo itself is a look into the work-a-day life of a Mexican community.  Shop here, and you will be shopping shoulder-to-shoulder with locals.  English is spoken moderately here and there, but don't count on it.

RVing Teacapan. "Town of Fishermen" Mexico by RVMexico by RV to hectic places like Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan, with their street hucksters and the same tourist wares from one shop to the next, makes RVing Teacapan and its casual way of life, a welcome change.  The Mexican shopkeepers are polite and unobtrusive while you casually browse for what you wish.  Children in their school uniforms lounge at a local outdoor restaurant enjoying the shade of a tree after the morning's classes.  Young mothers and elderly grandmas cradle babies outside the doors of their humble homes.

As we travel down the dusty main street there are many varying restaurants, if you feel like a break from RV cooking.  For shopping, there is the fruteria (fruit and vegetable stand) which has an impressive offering of produce which is refreshed each day.  The panaderia (bakery) is a small shop off the main square run by a father and son.  They bake their breads and sweet rolls in an ancient cavernous brick and mud oven using a long paddle to remove the many pans that can bake at one time.  As one learns the rhythm here it becomes evident which abbarotes (corner store) carries the best selection of dairy products and which has the best eggs.  When shopping for canned goods, be sure to check the expiration dates as some products have been housed on shelves long past their due dates!  RVing Teacapan for a length of time means RVers will find most of their needs met with the shops here, or in the larger town of Escuinapa which is a 40 minute drive away.

RVing Teacapan - Villa Onac RV & Casitas Mexico by RVBecause the area is mostly rural, the incredible expanse of beach along the coastline is virtually unpopulated.  The water is comfortably warm to enjoy some boogie boarding or swimming in a quiet cove.  Dolphins are often seen in the waters along the shoreline at the wave break.  RVing Teacapan is a truly unique experience.  If travelling Mexico by RV, there are several RV parks and nearly-free camping areas along the beach, some with full service hookups and some dry camping.  If you would rather drive down by car, there are also hotel properties which have rooms, or separate casitas (cottages).

Mexico by RV is a diverse and varied experience depending on how and where one travels. If you are searching for your Mexico-state-of-mind, try RVing Teacapan, for a few days or a season!

Las Vegas by RV: Bright Lights, Big City to Red Rock Canyon Desert Solitude

Las Vegas by RV is more than just "Bright Lights, Big City".  When you need a break from the shows and casinos, you can be cruising through tranquil desert vistas in the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area in less than 30 minutes!

Las Vegas by RV: Bright Lights, Big City Paris Hotel & Casino
To find your way to this great picnic area and afternoon excursion destination, take Charleston Boulevard, which crosses Las Vegas Boulevard just a few blocks north of the Stratosphere. After 12 miles on Charleston Boulevard, the road bends to the left and becomes Blue Diamond Road, or State Route 159. The entrance to the park is well-marked.  No matter which RV resort you elect to stay in while visiting Las Vegas by RV, the office will no doubt have a brochure or map for this area.

The Red Rock Canyon Conservation area is accessed by a paved 13 mile one-way scenic drive, open from dawn to dusk each day.  There are many vista view points and well-appointed picnic areas along the way.  During our visit to Las Vegas by RV in October 2009, we took in this natural landmark attraction.  At that time, the entry fee was $5 per vehicle. The park was then constructing a new visitor center to replace the existing one. There is also a museum, book store and gift shop to visit.
Las Vegas by RV: Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area
We drove the park's scenic route in about 45 minutes with a few stops at the vista view points, making our round trip from the RV resort and back only two hours. You can spend all day picnicking and hiking the off-chute trails to other overlooks, such as Calico Hills, Icebox Canyon and La Madre Springs.  You can make your visit as long or as short as you like, but it's definitely worth the trip to this alternate Las Vegas experience!

Do yourself a favor the next time you visit Las Vegas by RV: pack a picnic basket, leave the "Bright Lights, Big City" behind you, and visit the Red Rock Canyon.
