Campground Etiquette: Sewer Connections

| Print |
Written by Brenda-Lee Thompson

Nothing ruins an RV experience faster than fumes from a neighbor who doesn't use campground etiquette for RV sewer connections.

Just plonking the RV sewer hose into the hole of the sewer connection at the site isn't the end of that job!   Without a proper RV sewer connection your sewage fumes will be carried by the wind and soon neighbours will be knocking on your door.

Use a proper elbow fitting on the end of your hose to seal. Often RVers will use a brick or a heavy rock propped against the elbow fitting to ensure it doesn't pop out of the sewer connection in the ground.

If the sewage smells still persist, check that the RV sites have proper sewage ventilation. The underground pipes should be vented with a cap which allows air to go into the ground and the smells stay underground. If the RV sites are not vented properly, i.e. with a simple pipe in the ground with no cap, inform the office and insist that the situation be rectified.

RV sewage fumes are not only uncomfortable to smell, they are dangerous and toxic to our health.

Use campground etquiette to ensure that your RV sewer connections are safe and neighbor-friendly.
