RV metal roofing is being replaced by rubber or EPDM membrane roofs by RV manufacturers. In this economy, DIY roof repair isn't just for houses -- it's for RV's too. Keeping your metal roof in good shape with some RV roof maintenance will keep your RV a joy to use for years to come. And you can do the metal roof repair yourself.
.
A flat roof, as in an RV metal roof, is subject to debris and dirt puddling and etching into the roof material. Part of regular RV roof maintenance is getting up there and sweeping and washing this debris away. As RV metal roofs get older it is likely necessary to reseal the flat roof to keep costly leaks away in the future. And always remember, preventative maintenance on your roof is the key to preventing costly leaks and frequent repair jobs in the future.
Refer to your RV owner's manual for guidelines on the proper procedure and materials recommended for resealing RV metal roofs.
Go to your local RV parts store and buy a quart or gallon size can of RV roof sealer for metal roofs. If the sealer doesn't come with an application brush, be sure to get one of those as well. Discuss your project with the RV service center if you have questions.
Prepare, prepare, prepare your metal roof surface. If you don't have one, buy a hand scraper from any hardware store. Using the scraper, remove old seal that is curling or cracked and remove any debris and dirt from the RV metal roof. No need to remove sealer which is still intact.
Using any household broom brush the entire roof clean, including seams and then wash the entire metal roof with a rag and mild soap and water.
If possible, wait for a cloudy day, or park your RV in the shade of a building to keep the roof cool during the application of the sealer.
Apply the sealer to the RV metal roof according to the instructions on the product. Pay particular attention to areas with screws or joins as these are obvious locations for future leaks to start.
Take your time and ensure enough metal roof sealer is applied for a good coating. The coating will cure and dry within a day or two.
A bit of work, minimal cost, and you've done it! Your DIY roof repair on your RV metal roof is complete.
