Frequently Asked Questions How to Clean Awnings

Awnings are a necessary part of RV living and at some point you'll have to know how to clean awnings to keep them in good condition. You may even have a free standing awning not attached to your motorhome or RV so you can drive away.

Depending on your RV, you may have one, or multiple awnings including those over windows, over slide outs and for shade. Cleaning caravan awnings is a frequently asked question. Even if you have your motorhome or RV washed along your travels, the awning will be retracted and you will have to deal with it on your arrival at your destination.

No one wants to sit under their awning to relax, only to look up at dirt streaks and mildew. It really takes the enjoyment away. A clean awning not only looks great, but keeps the awning fabric in optimal condition.

If you are planning a retractable awnings wash, extend the awning completely. This includes window awnings. If possible, put the awning in the most slanted down position to make the reach easier.

Next, use a broom and brush away any loose debris, leaves and cobwebs from both the top side and under side of the awning.

It is important to use gentle products and pressure for RV retractable awnings wash and window awnings cleaning. If you are going to power washer your awning, too much pressure can actually embed the dirt and grime into the fabric of the awning.

Make a mixture of warm water and dish soap. If you have mildew, add a 1/2 cup of bleach into your full bucket of sudsy water.

Using a brush on an extension pole, scrub the awning and rinse with clean water from a hose. When you are scrubbing the underside of the awning, be careful to protect your eyes from the soap and bleach. Wear your sunglasses.

After a good rinse, the sun and breeze will dry it and your awning cleaning is done.
