Keep Your RV Cool While RVing In Hot Weather (Air Conditioner)To keep your RV cool while RVing in hot weather, follow these easy and economical tips:
  • Seems obvious, but we find we have forgotten to close a window or vent while our a/c is running. Check to make sure everything is closed. Foam cushions can be purchased to fit into the vent openings from the inside providing extra insulation. Bubble foil kits can be purchased for vents that include small Velcro patches for quick installation and removal.
  • While RVing, make sure your system fan is on high speed. Running the fan on high speed will use less energy overall as the air conditioner will shut down periodically.
  • Check that the fins on the air conditioner are not damaged or bent. Remove the cover on the roof of your RV if you cannot see the fins. Some fins are visible with the cover on. If the fins are bent over carefully and gently separate the fins with a screwdriver. A fin comb is available but the careful use of a screwdriver will yield good results. Separating the fins will allow maximum air flow over all the fins for maximum cooling.
  • Clean the interior air filter on the air return vent. Many have clip out filters while some need to have a panel unscrewed for access. Wash out the filter with warm water and a mild detergent, then allow to air dry. Reinstall the filter and enjoy the cool while RVing.
  • Parking under trees is obvious, but you can also keep your RV cool in the shade of nearby hills and rocky cliffs. This can significantly shorten the number of hours the sun beats down on your RV. Park with your awning facing the sun during the hottest times of the day so as to shade the side of your RV with the awning. Park your rig so that the sidewalls of the RV take the least amount of sun in a day.
  • Pull your blinds and shades down to keep out as much of the solar heat as possible. The windows of your RV absorb a lot of solar energy and transfer this heat inside. Cardboard can be used between the window glass and the window coverings inside the RV. While simple and cheap, this is a very effective way to keep your RV cool on the inside.
  • Insulated bubble foil is even more effective than cardboard at keeping the heat out. Once cut to size it can be stored behind dinette cushions for future use. The bubble foil is available at hardware stores. It Keep Your RV Cool While RVing In Hot Weather (Fan)comes in various widths and lengths and can easily be custom cut with scissors to fit your RV windows. The bubble foil provides about an R-6 insulation value. You can cut covers for your RV vents as well and use small Velcro patches for quick installation and removal.
  • Last but not least, keep a table fan or two in your rig. One in the bedroom and one in the main living area will help to keep air circulating while RVing in hot weather.  Simply moving the warmer air around can help you extend the time before actually turning on the a/c.

These tips are economical ways to manage the heat and the electric bill.  Follow any or all of these tips to keep your RV cool while RVing!
