Whether you are big into social networking, or just using Facebook to check up on the grand kids, make sure you are protecting your privacy online using web privacy settings.

According to a report out of New York, consumers are getting smarter and more deliberate in reviewing the privacy settings on their web social sites. This is good news in light of the bad press that many social media sites are getting when it comes to the privacy of its users. Facebook privacy and Smartphone privacy settings have had some bad headlines which have given social networking users pause for concern.
One study reported that in 2011, 92% of social networking users surveyed said they have viewed or changed privacy settings on programs they use. This is a significant rise from 63% of same reported in 2009.
Web privacy is an increasingly hot topic as we become more dependent and involved in social networking. Facebook has been criticized the most for giving public access to too much of its users’ personal information, leaving them victim to hacker attacks. Smartphone privacy is also at risk now that Facebook has a mobile application that allows users to sync their phone contacts list with Facebook. Facebook has been accused of making these contact numbers available to advertisers, and possibly the general public.
Some basic steps to take toward protecting your privacy online are:
  • restricting who can see your social networking profiles
  • limiting the information that can be found publicly by searching for your name,
  • blocking web beacons that sites use to collect and track their personal information.
The moral of the story is that your Facebook privacy and Smartphone privacy are your responsibility. Don’t expect anyone else to be looking out for your best interests in this regard. Do everything you can to avoid hacker attacks by educating yourself about privacy settings for the social networking in which you participate.
