RV How To: Keep My RV Cool in Hot Weather

| Print |
Written by Brenda-Lee Thompson

Lots of RV How To guides about RVing talk about keeping the RV cool in hot weather. And all the tips are correct! When living in an RV for long or short periods of time, it comes down to common sense. Different from our homes, the small space of my RV and yours requires a deliberate effort at keeping the unit cool.

My RV Travel trailer is 32 feet long and has only one air conditioner. To help the AC not work overtime we do the following:

Ensure to keep windows and vents closed. It pays to double check that a vent hasn't been left open by mistake. Losing precious cool air through one small vent will have a huge impact on the comfort of the environment inside.

Sounds obvious, but keep the door shut! And, plan your exit and entrance strategy so as to have the door open as little as possible. When bringing in groceries try to coordinate as few trips in and out as possible.

One thing about RVing is that we don't always have control over which we to park the recreational vehicle unit. If possible, we park my RV with the least amount of surface area facing the sunniest direct, such as facing the front cap or end cap in the direction that will sustain the most exposure to the sun. Or, park the awning side to the afternoon sun.

Speaking of awnings, living in an RV through hot weather means keeping the awning extended as much as possible. Most awning rollers have a spare channel cut so that a sun shade can be slipped onto the roller for even more relief from the elements. For my RV travel trailer a sun shade was custom made by an awning company so that we could have it the full length of the large factory awning.

RV How To tips about RVing and living in an RV are the best way to learn from the experience of others.
