RV Roof Repair -- DIY Fix for RV EPDM Roof

| Print |
Written by Brenda-Lee Thompson

Roof repair of your RV EPDM roof is an easy do it yourself fix. It just takes care, patience and proper preparation. EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, a rubber compound which is a lightweight solution for RV roof coating.

Just like any other DIY project, the key is prepare, prepare, prepare. When undertaking an EPDM roof repair, it is important to follow these basics:

  • Brush away any dirt or loose debris from the repair area and surrounding area on the RV roof.
  • Remove any oxidation and staining from the surface of the EPDM roof. For a small repair area, scrub with solvent and a nail brush or similar abrasive scrubber.   Oil and grease must definitely be removed before any attempt to make an EPDM roof repair.
  • For larger areas, a power washer can be used. You can also use a stiff car wash brush. Whichever method you choose, it is important that the area of the EPDM roof is completely white before attempting to repair it.
  • Use a primer and adhesive product which is compatible to your EPDM membrane roof. Check your manufacturer's manual for suggestions. Follow the product instructions completely.
To fully re-coat an RV EPDM Roof membrane, the DIY fix procedure is similar:
  • Clean the entire roof using a pressure washer and/or a stiff car wash brush.
  • Ensure that all oil, grease and mildew stains are completely gone. Try using TSP or a mixture of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. Keep scrubbing until the roof is as clean as possible.
  • Let the roof dry completely.
  • Follow the manufacturer's directions for re-coating the RV EPDM roof.
