Whatever style of recreational vehicle or RV trailer you have, roof maintenance and roof RV repair are a necessary to ward off the dreaded roof leak. Two types of materials are generally used on recreational vehicles, being metal and rubber (also called EPDM).

Metal roof material will be found on an older recreational vehicle, such as motorhome, RV trailer, and fifth wheel models. Regular roof maintenance and cleaning involves actually getting yourself up on that RV roof to inspect and ensure you're not headed for a roof leak.
Depending on where you RV, there will be environmental pollution residue, bird droppings, leaves and pine needles from parking under trees and even small twigs and branches. If this debris is left on the RV roof, over time with rain and heavy dew, the residue will run down the side of your RV leaving black streaks. This debris, especially pine needles, can burrow their way into corners and weak spots that are prone to the roof leak problem, such as around roof vents.
To clean your RV metal roof, it is best and easiest to use an automotive wash and wax cleaner product. Check with your RV owner's manual for any guidelines on recommendations in that regard.
There is no replacement for getting yourself up on that roof twice a year for a good cleaning and inspection. You will want to do this three or four times a year if you consistently park under trees. Once your RV metal roof is clean, take the time to inspect corners, seals and calking. Take a look at the condition of the roof sealer and look for places where it is thin or starting curl. This indicates some further roof maintenance is required to prevent roof leak.
