RVing in Mexico with Pets

When RVing in Mexico with pets, your pet etiquette will dictate whether you and your RVing neighbours have an agreeable time together or not.RVing in Mexico with Pets - Bailey in Teacapan

RVers head to Mexico for the weather, the beaches, and the relaxed lifestyle. While we are relaxing, we sometimes relax our pet control too much.

Just like at home where neighbours may not appreciate your Fido sniffing and peeing in their flower beds, so it is on the road. RVing in Mexico brings others in close physical proximity with only thin walls between neighbours and  Rover's barks and whines.

To keep your pets, and your RVing neighbours happy, be sure to:

  • Keep your dog (and cat) near your RV home and on a leash on your side of the RV lot
  • Don't go on an outing and leave your pet tied up outside your rig. Anxious pets cause problems.
  • If your dog likes to bark, be mindful of your neighbours and don't let it go on and on -- even while you are walking Fido outside. We have often seen people standing and talking to others while their accompanied pet barks and barks at their feet.
  • Dogs love the beach, but they don't belong in the RV park's pool. Keep your Best Friend's bath time to the beach.
  • Towns and beach locales often have reclaimed water residue from residents washing down sidewalks or watering down dirt streets.   Also, some lawns may be sprayed with poisons to deter ants and other pests. All this residue will be on your pet's feet, and if they lick their feet after their walk, can get very sick. Frequently washing their feet will keep this to a minimum.

These are just a few tips to keep your RVing in Mexico neighbours happy while you are camped beside them with a pet. The real goal, though, is to keep man's best friend safe and sound while travelling.

  • Visit the vet before you leave home to make sure all shots are up to date and that your pet is healthy. Keep the paperwork along for any borders you may cross in your travels.
  • Tell your vet where you intend to travel to make sure you have appropriate flea and tick medications along for the duration of your trip.
  • While RVing in Mexico, keep close tabs on your pets as there may be unsafe drinking water and strange new dangers easily accessible; such as stray animals with diseases, and interesting lizards and snakes to chase.
  • If your pet does need medical attention, ask around the RV park for a referral to a local vet.  If you are in an extremely remote area, call your vet back home and ask for advice.

We love our furry family members too much to leave them at home, but remember everyone enjoys their trip more if we remember pet safety and etiquette when RVing in Mexico with pets.
