Renting an RV What to Know -- Motorhome, Fifth Wheels, Travel Trailers

| Print |
Written by Brenda-Lee Thompson

Campers can't wait to hit the road in their recreational vehicles at the first sign of spring.  You don't necessarily have to own an RV to enjoy the benefits of camping; but you may find you enjoy your recreational vehicle rental so much, you'll eventually buy your own.  It is easy to rent RVs through RV rental companies, RV dealers, or even your destination campground may offer an on-site rental.

Or, maybe you do own your own RV, but other would-be campers want to come along on your adventures.  Spending time with friends, or family reunions can take on a new twist with the RV lifestyle!

Motorhomes are the most popular rental RV, but other units are also available depending on your needs: Class C motorhomes, Class A motorhomes, pull behind travel trailers, 5th wheel trailers, and tent trailers (also called pop up trailers) are also often RV rental.

The RV rental process is easy, but there are something you need to know before you sign the contract:

1.      A valid driver's license (which also provides proof of age) is required by the RV rental company
2.     Ask about the cost, the length of time you want and the season. Sometimes a week or two either way may mean the difference between a higher seasonal rate.
3.     Just like renting a car, ask about mileage fees, and if insurance is included or not. Make sure you are insured for ALL the drivers who plan to take a turn at the wheel.
4.     Also, ask if a damage deposit is required and how it is refunded to you when you return the unit in good condition.
5.     Get a list of the household items which are included in the RVs for your convenience. Ask if they have packages which include the items which you will require, for example, bedding and toiletries if you do not want to provide your own.

It can feel intimidating to get behind the wheel of a recreational vehicle which seems a lot bigger than the vehicle you usually drive, but the RV rental company or RV dealers will give you tips and explanations to help you feel more comfortable. Ask if the agent will accompany you on a test drive to answer any questions you may have.
